How has the 2008 season been for you?
It has been a fantastic year. I am glad with the way I have got runs whenever I got the opportunity to bat. I enjoy playing cricket and whatever version of the game — T20, ODIs or Test matches, my job is to just go out there and get runs for my team.
Did you expect to score so many runs this season?I have always been performing consistently and getting runs in the domestic cricket. Therefore, it is not surprising as far as I am concerned. It was always on the back of my mind to make my country proud. I always knew that I was good enough to play at the higher level and score in whatever conditions and against any bowler.
What kind of chemistry do you have with Virender Sehwag?
The fact that we both come from the same city and play for the same team at the domestic level has helped a lot. We complement and understand each other. Besides, we are good friends as well. He also happens to be my favourite batsman. The fact that I am playing with my favourite batsman motivates me to score runs.
How difficult or easy it is to change gears from T20 to ODIs? In today’s times one has to be ready for this. We are professional cricketers and have to be ready when required. One has to cope up with the timing and the pressure to play at the highest level.
What happened in the third Test against Australia when you elbowed Shane Watson and were handed a one-Test ban?I am on the field what he is off the field. Relaxed, patient and focused, but there is a passion involved when I play for the country. I am so passionate on the field that I just can’t stand any nonsense.
Have you set any goals for 2009?
I don’t believe in setting goals. I take each match at a time and play as if it is my last match. I just like to go out there and enjoy my cricket. If you set goals then the pressure of performing takes a toll on you hence I have no plans.
How has the team changed under skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni?
Records only speak about his changes.
